| Würde von The Airborne Toxic Event nur ein Eintrag in der Rubrik kurioser Bandnamen übrigbleiben, man würde der Band aus Hollywood sträflich Unrecht tun. Ihr selbstbetiteltes Debüt, das jetzt auch bei uns erscheint, verdient eindeutig wesentlich mehr Aufmerksamkeit als alle DSDS-Clone dieser Welt zusammen. Als Verwandte im Geiste denkt man sich The National, The Strokes, Pub-Rock, sowie eine homöopathische Dosis 80er Post-Punk. Das alles scheint auf den ersten Blick alles andere als aufregend, aber Mikel Jolletts Songwriting sorgt hier für das gewisse Etwas. Jolletts Texte entspringen vielmehr der amerikanischen story telling-Tradition, als dem fein ziselierten Popdiktat von Strophe und Refrain, und sie tragen oft die leicht melancholische Note der Enttäuschung. Im scheinbaren Gegensatz dazu sind The Airborne Toxic Event Songs unverschämt eingängig. Das stellt schon der Opener „Wishing Well“ eindrucksvoll unter Beweis und mit „Gasoline“ dürfte ihnen ein offenkundiger Tanzbodenkracher gelungen sein. Die Gitarren von Mikel Jollett und Steven Chen spielen zackig angerotzt und die perlenden Melodien fräsen sich unvermeidlich ins Ohr. Die Rhythmussektion mit Noah Harmon am Bass und Daren Taylor am Schlagzeug füllt geschickt die Räume und der Beat schreckt auch nicht vor discofizierten Reminiszenzen zurück. Betupft wird das Ganze mit Violine und Keyboards von Anna Bulbrook. Das Tempo bewegt sich vorwiegend im Midtempo- bis Uptempobereich, was die Tanzbarkeit zusätzlich massiv erhöht. Der britische NME, der bekanntlich um Superlative nie verlegen ist, hat einmal mehr die weltbeste Band entdeckt. Das ist natürlich NME-Unfug, aber ein anderes Postulat kann voll und ganz unterstützt werden: The Airborne Toxic Event machen „poetry you can dance to.“ Im Auto oder daheim auf dem Sofa geht das auch gut im Sitzen. |
